Tonight is Nanowrimo Eve!!! YAY!!! Can't wait to start working on my "novel in 30 days"!!! Last year was my first year to try. The goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days, during the month of November. I didn't quite make it to 50,000 last year, but I did get a little over halfway there....can't remember the exact word count....I'll have to look that up!!!

I've always wanted to write books!! Wouldn't it be great to write THE "great American novel" !?!?!?!

Must go to bed now & get rested up for the upcoming writing marathon!!! Good night & good luck to all fellow Nano participants!!! ZZZZzzzzzzzz :)

Back to School...

Wow, I've actually been back in school for five weeks now!! It has, surprisingly, flown by. Again, just like last year, so many changes have taken place. I'll be glad when all of the kinks have been worked out. I have been going 90 mph trying to keep up with all of the changes.

THE WEATHER!!! Oh, MY Goodness!!! It was beautiful yesterday and today!!! I love this weather!!! It feels like fall, my favorite time of the year, besides Spring. I love sweater weather, the leaves turning colors, pumpkins, etc. We had such an unusual summer. It rained 28 or 29 days in June. It was really hot for two, maybe three weeks, tops. Now, it is cooling off, and was actually a little chilly this morning.

Morgy is getting ready to show a heifer in the local free fair this weekend. This will be her first time to show a heifer. Last year, she did the pig thing. Her pig's name was Izzy Ella Bella. She finally decided on a name for the heifer ---Gracie Lou....I like it!! We looked up lots of names on the internet the other night and could never find one that we both liked. I'm surprised she even paid any attention when I said I didn't like certain names!! I didn't think my vote would even matter, you know how teenagers are. If I found a cute name I liked, she'd roll her eyes & say, "No, that's stupid, Mom." She didn't like "Gee Whiz, or Buttercup, or Flossie", or anything! I even suggested "Maggie Moo" because she (Morgy) likes the ice cream by the same name. She said, "No, Mom, I can't name her that, Granny Maggie's feelings might get hurt!" I said, "Oh, yeah, I didn't think of that, I was just thinking about the ice cream, & it's cute." She said, "No, Mom, not Maggie Moo!" Then, when she'd find a name she liked, I'd say, "Nah, not that one." I figured she'd just pick one she liked. Then, today, she came up to me and said, "Hey, I think I came up with a name --Gracie Lou." I just looked at her, speechless. She said, "What?! You don't like it?" I said, "Gracie Lou,... Gracie Lou,...yeah, I like it!" She was shocked. She said, "Oh, my gosh, that's what I'm naming her, then, because we haven't agreed on any names, up until now!" I looked at her and said, "Do you know WHY I like it" She said, "No, why?" I said, "Well, your great grandma's name, on my dad's side, was Grace, and my mom's middle name was Lou." She said, "Are you serious?" I said, "Yes." She said, "Well, that settles it, I'm definitely naming her Gracie Lou!"

Back to Reality...

My friend and I got back from our first cruise a week ago tonight. We had fun, or at least I did. She was seasick, sore foot, etc., so she didn't have such a good time. What an experience!! This is something I've always wanted to do and I'm so glad I did!! It was sooooo relaxing. We met so many really nice people on the ship. That was the best part of the cruise, I think. And of course, the food was good, just as everyone had told me. But, what surprised me the most was how peaceful and relaxing the sleep was!! The ship rocked me to sleep every night. We had an inside cabin, so it was pitch dark inside the cabin. It was actually the best sleep I've ever had in my entire life. Amazing to think of all the things I did and saw on the fun-filled journey, but the thing I enjoyed the most was truly, the good night's rest for seven nights in a row!

We stopped at Montego Bay, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. While at Jamaica, unfortunately and sadly, seventeen people on a tour bus from our ship were robbed at gunpoint of their money, cameras, passports, and other personal belongings. There were even several children on this bus. Thankfully, none of these people were harmed physically, but I'm sure they were terrified, nonetheless. There is an article about this occurrence on the web-site CruiseCritic.com, under the "news" section. There are also suggestions on this web-site about precautions one should take when taking shore excursions while stopped at these ports.
As first time cruisers, we learned a lot of the do's and don'ts of cruising by asking friends and family members about a million and one questions. We definitely did not get any of the good tips from our travel agent. Now that we have a much better idea of what to expect, the next cruise should be less stressful and way more relaxing. Our next cruise is less than a month away. My friend is not too excited about it, since she was miserable the whole time. However, I am looking forward to it because my daughter(who will turn 15 four days before we leave) is going on this one, along w/one of her friends, and another one of my friends from junior high & high school is going on this one. It will also be a shorter cruise - 5 days, as opposed to 7 days. I think that will be much better. Seven days was a bit too long for me.

The people we met were the best!! I fell in love with one family, in particular. It was a grandmother and grandfather, who were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary!! The grandmother was in her 80's and was just beautiful. She didn't look a day over 60!! Their daughter, Jeannie, and grandson, Mike, among other children and grandchildren (I think 14 in all) were there, as well, to celebrate the occasion. We ran into Grandma, Grandpa, Jeannie, and Mike almost everyday after we met them at Margaritaville in Jamaica. They were the sweetest people, we just loved them to pieces. There were several other couples that we met who were very nice and friendly, but our little 60th wedding anniversary family was our favorite!!

More about the cruise later!! Take care & God Bless. :)

Chocolate gravy....

I went to one of my best friend's daughter's birthday party today. What a great party idea for small children she had!! They had the party at the local gymnastics building. The two and three year olds were able to do what they love to do best--run, jump, and play non-stop for two hours!! (All in a nicely padded environment, complete with lowered trampoline, balance beams, a really cool foam pit that they could jump into or swing over and fall into from a rope!) The young lady on duty today brought out a huge parachute and engaged not only the kiddos, but the parents, as well, in some great parachute activities. Of course, they loved this!!! I bet all those kiddos are already tucked in for the night and sawing some serious Zzzs!!! They had to be worn out from all of the activities and the battering of the pinata!! Happy Birthday, little cutie-pie!!

Alright, I had a little taste of heaven this morning!!! I have always heard people talk about "chocolate gravy", but have never tasted it!! I've asked several people for their recipe, but haven't ever really got my hands on one that was written down. You know how people are-"oh, just put a little of this, and a little of that, it's real easy, etc." But, me, I have to have a written recipe in my chubby, little hand before I'm brave enough to try a new recipe! I looked at some of the recipe websites, and finally found one that sounded pretty easy, printed it off, and thought I'd give it a stab. Well, I did it this morning, and what do you know? It is as good as everybody has always said!! It was soooooo good. Can you say, "YUMMERS!"? But, then, of course, I love chocolate, so, it's already almost fail-proof just because it's chocolate!! The recipe suggested that you serve it with biscuits and bacon, and that's exactly what I did!!! Now, if you're trying to lose weight, (like me) this is probably not the recipe that you want to try. It is, I am sure, LOADED with all kinds of calories, but, boy howdy, as Paula Dean would say, it is delicious!!! Ladies, when you need a chocolate fix, this is the best way to get it---just ladle it all over your hot biscuits and enjoy. Like I said, "a little taste of heaven".

Just in case any of you want to try this, here is the recipe:

CHOCOLATE GRAVY

1/2 c. (or one stick) butter
4 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 c. all-purpose flour (I used whole wheat graham flour)
3/4 c. white sugar
2 c. milk

Melt the butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.

Add the cocoa & flour. Stir until a thick paste is formed.

Stir in the sugar and milk.

Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened.

(It will look gritty at first,(because of the sugar) but, if you continue to stir while cooking, it will get smooth as it thickens up.)

Serve with biscuits or buttered toast and bacon on the side. It is so sweet, you really need the salty bacon to balance it out.

ENJOY!!!

Back to school...again!

Okay, at this point, we've missed ten school days in the last month or two. Snow, sleet, ice, you name it, we've had it!!! We missed yesterday because of snow, but, went back today (Friday). My daughter was even aggravated that we missed yesterday!!! I'm double aggravated!!! I really don't want to go to school in June, but, it looks like we will be. Bummer!! Chopping ice for the horse and dogs is no fun. The pig is fine though. She is at the Ag barn and they have a nice little heated water tank. Little Izzy Ella Bella is growing up to be a big girl--she now weighs over 200 pounds!!! Did you know that pigs bark like dogs when they get mad?!?!?! I always just thought they oinked. It's so funny, it just cracks me up!! I'm totally serious. I was at the Ag barn w/my daughter, and I was trying to get the goofy Izzy to get away from the gate until I was sure I had it fixed so she couldn't get out. I was just shooing her away, but she insisted on staying near where I was (because she was socializing w/her brother or sister in a pen near me) so I kept trying to shoo her down to the other end of the barn. She finally took off and this loud barking, yes, barking sound was coming out of her!!! It was so funny, I was cracking up. I've heard her do that on numerous occasions, but, it just tickles my funny bone every time she does it!! Why doesn't she oink??? It's a mystery to me. I told my daughter we should've named her "Spot" instead of Izzy Ella Bella!! I really do need to videotape and/or record her when she's making this unusual barking sound. I could really use it when I need a good laugh!!

Oh!! Happy Groundhog's Day!!!! Yay!! They say an early Spring!!! Hip, hip, hooray for the good 'ol groundhog!!! Thank you, Phil!!! Please don't disappoint me! :)

Melting away....

The snow/sleet/ice is slowly melting away today. We still have a lot on the ground and on the street in front of my house, but, I'm hoping/praying we get to go back to school tomorrow. Yep, that's right folks, I actually WANT to go back!!!! Staying at home all day for NINE days straight does not suit me. The first two or three days were nice, cozy, and very productive. I was really getting into the cleaning/organizational mode. At this point, however, I'm just plain desperate to get out of this house.

My students probably won't remember me, it's been so long since I've seen them!!!! Oh, no, I just remembered all the paperwork I've got to do when I get back to school....uck....second thought, I kinda like it here in my humble abode..... :) Nah, seriously, I'm ready to get back to my routine. It will take at least a good week to get my little Autistic students back to their routine. They will be very out of sorts that their routines were disrupted. Ay-yi-yi-yi!!! But, I miss them, they're like my own. I should be getting about three new students, so therein lies all the paperwork headed my way. Joy, joy, joy!!!

Alaska or Oklahoma?!?!

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm in the wrong state!!! We are supposed to get more of the 'ol "s" word------SNOW!!!! One t.v. station says 6-12 inches, another one says 8-15 inches!!!! We still have ice from the precipitation dumped on us last Friday!!! We've missed five days of school with this storm, 2 or 3 from the last storm, a few weeks ago. Holy Moly!!! We'll be going to school until July!!!!

I hope our Izzy (the pig) is alright!!! The ag instructor told us he would check on her everyday if we couldn't get there, but, I'm really starting to feel guilty that we haven't been over there in seven days!!! But, the roads in town are still horrible. The trash trucks are not even running, because the roads are so bad.

Our animals here--the four dogs, one cat, and one horse are doing fine. We give them fresh water & feed two or three times a day. They all have nice warm barns to stay in. Izzy is inside a barn, as well, we just can't get to her...poor little piglet (she weighs about 170 now). She probably thinks we've deserted her.

Again, my heart and prayers go out to friends and family in Southeastern Oklahoma. They have been without electricity for the last seven days and counting. Some of them are regaining electricity sporadically, then, it goes off for several hours, then, it might come back on for awhile, etc. I just pray that this next front doesn't set them back again. It would be really nice if it would just bypass them altogether.

Love and prayers....

FOUR DAYS AND COUNTING...

We've now missed four days of school, and I was just notified we would be out tomorrow, as well. Our state superintendent has stated that those days missed during the ice storm will probably not be excused. Bummer! Wah! There, I've done my whining! May 18th would have been our last day of school. I would gladly give up Spring Break to make up five of those days!!

Oh, well, that's life....At least I have been able to get some things accomplished around the house!! I have been cleaning and organizing like a mad woman!! Woo-hoo!! :)

Well, gotta go for now!! Got to get ready for more snow!!!

Sunday, January 14, 2007

Just got the phone call...no school tomorrow. Bummer...I really didn't want to miss any more days, (no, I don't have fever) even though I love snow days. We have used up all of the snow days that were built into our schedule for this school year, so we will have to make up any we miss from here on out. According to all the weather reports, that may be the next three or four days, at least.
We have yet another icy winter blast! Trying to stay warm, keep the ice chopped for the animals, etc. Hoping to keep my wonderful electricity. So many people in the state are without electricity. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. We did have to leave school early Friday because of the sleet and ice accumulation. Parents were picking up their kiddos left & right. Monday, the kids are out on holiday, but, the teachers were going to have to go back for inservice. My guess is that I will get a telephone call this evening cancelling our workshop. Darn, hate it!! The temp is not supposed to get above 20 until Thursday, so we will probably miss at least three or four days of school this week.

Update on Izzy Ella Bella, the piglet.... Actually, she is no longer a cute, little piglet, she's a huge, honkin' 163 pounds of bacon!!! (my daughter's FFA show pig) We can't get to her (at the ag barn) to check on her because of the roads. We went over Thursday before the storm hit and filled up her water tank and feed trough. The ag teacher, God Bless his soul, told us not to try to drive over there to check on her. He said he has to go over there everyday, so he will check on her for us. God love him. I guess Morgy & I will have to bake him some cookies or brownies to repay his kindness.

Morgy has once again deserted me to go play in the snow and ice with some family friends. This has become a tradition --if if snows, sleets, ices over, etc., they make a trip to town to pick her up, then, she spends a few days with them to go sledding, ride the 4 -wheeler, etc. Before she left yesterday, she went out to check on Charlie (the horse) and the dogs---feeding them and chopping ice, etc. She was gone for quite awhile, so I looked out to check on her and there she was lying on top of the thick layer of frozen sleet, face down, with the two biggest dogs, Cujer and Goldie, trying to roll her over. It alarmed me at first, I thought she had passed out or something, then, I realized she was playing with them. Goofy kid!! :) Those two big dogs love this snowy, sleety weather!! Cujer is so huge, he looks like a polar bear!! The other two dogs, Patches and Biscuit, were in their nice warm barn curled up in the hay, with the cat. Yeah, we have a zoo around here.

Well, I had better get back to work. I am taking this opportunity (being stuck inside) to work on one of those resolutions --getting organized. Translation--get rid of all the extra junk in the spare bedroom, so I actually have a spare bedroom, not a junk room!! I'm doing pretty good, I'm on a roll, so I'd better get back to it while I'm in the mood!
